HOW TO IDENTIFY A BAD HOUSE

People are making life changes like changing jobs or moving to a new place or apartment. As they say experience is the best teacher but the lesson will not be so bitter if it was learnt from another’s experience. From personal experience and that of others, here are 7 Tips that can come in handy when you’re searching for a house or an apartment.

** Tip 1
Don’t get just one agent to search, get multiple. One key to getting a house in record time is to have multiple agents. The downside is that this comes at a cost as these agents ask for registration fees from #3,000, then for every house they take you to see their transportation fare is on you and If you’re very ‘ lucky’ lunch and airtime request will be added too.

Set aside money for ‘ miscellaneous’ so you don’t end up spending from the actual money saved up for getting the apartment.

** Tip 2
Streamline what you want or don’t want. Tell the agents in precise and exact terms what your preferences are (eg) Storey building, prepaid metre, No landlord living there, not close to the main road etc. This way you’ll save time, effort and money.

** Tip 3

Learn to use the power of language. People are more open to talk or give you information if you speak the same language. If you get to a place you’re potentially going to rent and you find someone speaking a language you can relate in too…Sir, Ma, please drop grammar and switch to that language and make enquiries codedly.

Trust me you might find out information the agent may not have divulged. Have it in mind that their ( Agents) relationship with you is purely business so don’t always expect too much.

**Tip 4
Pay attention to tiny details like wall paint of the rooms. As trivial as it seems a freshly painted wall or a Wall paint looking somewhat new might indicate that the former occupants didn’t stay long there long before moving out.

People don’t usually go through the stressful process of searching for a house only to leave shortly after, probably after the expiration of their first rent. Make enquiries so you too don’t leave a fresh wall paint behind.

** Tip 5

Blend in, ask questions. Go to the Aboki’s kiosk, go to the small shop owner , buy water, biscuit, sweet, just buy anything. Then strike up small talk and conversation. ” Mama how this area be?”, ” water dey enter that house if rain fall? “, ” The people that live for that house stay well before them pack comot?”… Etc.

** Tip 6
Avoid low looking houses and look out for water marks at the base of the wall ,this is to avoid having rivers and co for a visit during the rainy season . The new trend is that house owners now use tiles to cover up the marks on the waters that indicate that water gets into the house during heavy rains and one who isn’t careful will fall for it thinking it’s just a design.

** Tip 7
Ward off bad vibes and spirts with salt. According to a long time house agent, a person planning to move into a new apartment should sprinkle salt on the corners of the rooms in the house to chase away bad spirits. The salt should be sprinkled and then left for 3-7days before the person finally moves in.

*** Tips aside and on a lighter note, wouldn’t it make things so much easier if former occupants of a house left clues and secret messages for incoming occupants?

Imagine walking into one of the closets of a house you want to rent and you find the inscription,

Run for your life the landlord is a ritualist ” or ” Do not rent except you want to start rearing fish in the parlour during rainy season “…lol 😎😊😇
